Great Start Schedules

Recommended Schedules

The Great Start program is a flexible and optional resource designed to assist squadrons, allowing them to tailor it to their unique needs. Every squadron is different, and one size does not fit all. To accommodate this diversity, four suggested schedules are available to best align with various squadron situations, all while upholding broader program goals. Additionally, we encourage squadrons to make further adaptations as necessary to optimize the program for their specific context. To find the best schedule we recommend the implementation of an After Action process, which enables squadrons to assess what worked effectively and identify areas for enhancement in preparation for the next program cycle. This adaptability and feedback-driven approach ensure that Great Start serves as a valuable resource for all participating squadrons.

A - 8 weeks, 1 Saturday field day, full immersion

The recommended schedule spans eight weeks and provides a broad exploration of Cadet Life for new cadets. Great Start Cadet Cadre undergo training to become instructors and mentors during the preparation leading up to the course. It begins with a Squadron Open House, inviting the community, prospective members, and their families to learn about the Civil Air Patrol. Prospective cadets are encouraged to return for weeks 2 & 3, completing the trial period before completing membership applications.  The Saturday Field Day, positioned between weeks 4 & 5, allows for in depth training and some extra fun with a compass course and guest speaker.  Cadets wrap up their Curry requirements by week 7, celebrating the cohort's promotion ceremony on week 8.

B - 10 weeks, full immersion

For units unable to offer Saturday Field Day training, new cadets can get a similar broad exploration of Cadet Life over 11 weeks.  It begins with a Squadron Open House, inviting the community, prospective members, and their families to learn about the Civil Air Patrol. Prospective cadets are encouraged to return for weeks 2 & 3, completing the trial period before completing membership applications. Cadets wrap up their Curry requirements by week 9, celebrating the cohort's promotion ceremony on week 10.  This schedule allows units to still meet the "Curry in 8 weeks or less" goal from the Strategic Plan and Quality Cadet Unit Award criteria while accommodating operational constraints.

C- 8 weeks, core subjects

If your squadron's primary goal is to expedite cadets' progression through Curry, enabling them to join their fellow cadets sooner, the core subject schedule may align best with your objectives. This approach streamlines cadet training, emphasizing the elements required for promotion, and allocating less time to areas such as aerospace and emergency services. It begins with a Squadron Open House, inviting the community, prospective members, and their families to learn about the Civil Air Patrol. Prospective cadets are encouraged to return for weeks 2 & 3, completing the trial period before completing membership applications. Cadets wrap up their Curry requirements by week 7, celebrating the cohort's promotion ceremony on week 8, without the need for a Saturday activity.

D- 1 weekend, core subjects

For those looking for the quickest path to get a cohort started, the "Camp Curry" option offers a full weekend of intensive training. With two full days dedicated to learning, this schedule provides an immersive and efficient introduction to the "Great Start" program, making it perfect for those who thrive in a concentrated learning environment. However, please note that all participants must be registered members in eServices before embarking on the full training, which requires that prospective cadets complete their trial visits and applications before the training weekend. This option is ideal for those seeking a rapid introduction to the program.
